• GIDGET THE CHIHUAHUA, THE $500,000,000 DOG

    I Want My Taco!

Taco Bell, America's fast food answer to Mexican cuisine used a Chihuahua called Gidget to head their $500 million campaign between 1993 and  2004, thus creating another canine idol.

Despite a male voice, Gidget was all girl and went on to star in "Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blond. She suffered a stroke at the age of 15 and is still missed by many fans.

The Chihuahua may be the world's smallest dog breed but don't be fooled, this dog has a gigantic heart and personality. Whether you love them or not so much love them (who can hate a dog?), you have to admit this is one gutsy little fella.

They first became popular in the States in the 1960's and have increasingly become one of the top toy breeds. They date a lot further back though having first appeared in artwork in 300BC.

Hailing from, where else, Chihuahua the Mexican state bordering Texas, Arizona and New Mexico USA, some believe they are related to the Fennec fox. They look alike with massive ears and bulging eyes and like to eat mice, lizards or flakes of roast chicken these days.

When the Aztecs wiped out the Toltec nation during the 12th century, they fell for this diminutive dog and called it the "Techichis". They thought this dog could not only take away their sins but also remove diseases and guide their way to the afterlife. Unfortunately for the Chihuahua, when their owners died and were cremated, so were they! This is a noble breed with a history.

Recently they've become a bit of a fashion accessory, a handbag dog to be dressed up. Think "Beverly Hills Chihuahua 1, 2 and 3!

Now, this is not necessarily the worst thing that can befall a dog, you just have to remember that this is a dog, no more and no less. And certainly as big a commitment as any other breed.

People really underestimate these special dogs and sadly, next to the Pitbull, they are the most dumped and euthanised breed to American rescue centres. But if you have the time and are willing to put in the effort, the Chihuahua is a wonderful companion.
